It took sixty-one years for the New Orleans Jazz Museum to receive a federal grant, and, with all apologies to the National Jazz Museum, its unassuming Harlem home doesn’t quite match the genre’s influence. The anemic funding of the arts in America means that the institutions memorializing the country’s cultural exports look like scale models. Germany also provided millions of euros in direct support for artists who were affected by the pandemic. The budget for the National Endowment for the Arts has actually grown since 2016 by nearly sixty million dollars, to two hundred and seven million dollars in 2023, but that number is dwarfed by the German cultural ministry’s budget of €2.3 billion. State support for the arts doesn’t look quite the same on this side of the Atlantic. Azary was able to secure a five-hundred-thousand-euro loan and a free lease for the space from the city of Frankfurt, a signal that the German state had put its weight behind a night-life industry that is a vital part of the tourist economy. The Frankfurt museum was the result of years of lobbying from some of Germany’s most notable d.j.s and musicians. “Should the claim be a pure marketing measure,” the letter stated, “it inadmissibly exploits the cultures of people with histories of migration and oppression by marginalizing their achievements.”įor the members of Underground Resistance, MOMEM also represented something else: the continued neglect of techno-and Detroit-in the U.S. The situation escalated when Peter Feldmann, then the mayor of Frankfurt, sent an invitation for MOMEM’s opening party welcoming guests “in the middle of Frankfurt, where techno has its origin.” The accumulated snubs set off a conflagration in the fiercely protective techno community: female:pressure, a global consortium of women, nonbinary, and trans electronic-music artists, wrote an open letter condemning what they saw as the patriarchal whitewashing of a genre created by nonwhite and queer artists. The collaborators, who are now in their fifties and sixties, started the museum so that the story of techno’s Detroit origins wouldn’t get lost or erased as the genre’s popularity grew. Situated on Detroit’s Grand Boulevard, the modest space has been open since 2002 it is owned by the techno pioneer Mike (Mad) Banks and managed by Banks and the d.j. That claim would come as news to the founders of Underground Resistance, the Detroit-based music label behind the techno museum known as Exhibit 3000. “But there’s nothing like that at all for the field of electronic music, techno, house, club culture.” “There are museums for a lot of other kinds of music,” Alex Azary, a techno pioneer and MOMEM’s director, said in a video produced by a German music outlet and released shortly after Azary secured a space for the museum. MOMEM was billed as the world’s first museum to celebrate techno, finally giving the genre an official home in Germany, the country where the pulsing untz of kick drums and snares found a foothold in the global music scene. When the doors opened to the Museum of Modern Electronic Music ( MOMEM) in Frankfurt’s Hauptwache square, last year, it seemed that club music was finally getting its due.

These shirts generally depict something from a relatively popular show, though there is sometimes a more obscure anime represented. The big item in most of the loot anime past crates is going to be a shirt. The theme is a combination of a reason to include the items and loot anime spoilers for subscribers, but it's not necessarily all that important for your experience. The theme will usually connect a few shows that have loose thematic links or that might share a general genre, though it's hard to comprehend how some of the choices might fit at first. Since it's a Loot Crate spin-off, you're still going to get the monthly theme. The only real difference between what you see here and in Loot Crate's other boxes is the focus on anime. Whatever your experiences have been with that company, you at least have a good idea of the kinds of items that you'll see in the box. The first thing you have to understand about this box is that it's absolutely a Loot Crate spin-off. That's great for those who are fans of the big shows and like to have swag to show off, but it may not be for those who like to represent their love for their more obscure favorites. The anime represented herein are almost all either shows that are already very popular in the US or that have a strong online following. What's important to note, though, is that this is a very mainstream box. You're going to end up seeing a lot of different anime represented here, as well as some general anime trope related items from time to time. While this is definitely a fan crate, it's not really meant for fans of any specific genre or show. When you're looking at anime gear, you always have to figure out the specific audience that's being targeted. It definitely still follows the general Loot Crate theme, though - a shirt, a few neat side items, and some little things to fill out the crate. It's full of nothing but anime and anime-related items, so it's definitely not a standard geek box. Loot Anime is, first and foremost, a subscription box for anime fanatics. Is boudin dip spicy? I don’t find boudin dip to be spicy at all without the extra Cajun seasoning so that’s why I add it. But if you can’t find any, you can whip up your own dirty rice with ground sausage or ground beef, the trinity (onion, bell pepper, celery), lots of Cajun seasoning, and rice. What if I can’t get boudin? The Zummo’s brand that I use is actually sold in about half of the 50 states in Walmart of all places! And let me tell you Zummo’s is yummo. (If you do make this a no bake boudin dip, it’ll be full of flavor but the cheese won’t melt and the green onions will be stronger.) It’s a matter of taste because everything including the pork is already cooked. Or, this same hot boudin dip recipe can be prepared even faster by making it a cold boudin dip recipe. (Full recipe in the recipe card at the bottom for you to pin, print, and save.)Ĭan you serve boudin dip cold? No need to constantly babysit this to keep it warm at a party – it will still be delicious when it cools down. To make this cheesy dip you only need a few simple ingredients: I only recommend products that I love or would purchase for myself. (You may still find a bit of old school pork liver or heart in your boudin or dirty rice in local authentic eateries around New Orleans.) Don’t let that turn you off because nowadays, most boudin sold in grocery stores is straight up regular pork. The easiest way I find to describe it to newbies is that it’s dirty rice stuffed in a sausage casing.īoudin originated in France before making it’s way to southwest Louisiana and it was a way to use as much of the hog as possible. It’s even fun to say – repeat after me: “BOO-dan”.īoudin is mixture of cooked pork, rice, onions, bell peppers, and lots of spices wrapped up in a sausage casing, which is steamed, grilled, or smoked.Īlthough it’s referred to as boudin sausage, it’s not really a sausage. This Louisiana staple may not be well known everywhere, but you’ll wonder where it’s been all your life. Apple’s support for iCloud is very efficient. If you encounter problems using either service, then you can contact tech support for help. In other words, if you primarily use Apple devices, you’ll find that iCloud runs well, but if not, then OneDrive is the better option in terms of efficient performance. There’s a bit of set-up required, but once this is done, OneDrive operates and synchronises smoothly across various devices. It has well-designed apps not only for a broader range of smartphone and tablet models but also for Mac computers. Its folder system is built into Windows 10’s File Explorer, with no fuss in getting started with it. OneDrive, meanwhile, being a Microsoft product, runs smoothly on Windows PCs. However, if you don’t use Apple devices, you might struggle with iCloud, as its Windows app is difficult to work with, and its web browser interface is basic compared to competitors. There’s little in the way of set-up because if you have an Apple device, you’ll have an iCloud account, and all the software needed to store your files on the cloud is built in. Similarly, iCloud is built into the way that iPhones and iPads organise various types of files-e.g., you can easily synchronise an iPhone’s camera roll with the Photos app across your other devices. Your iCloud folder system comes built into the Mac’s Finder. ICloud works particularly smoothly with Apple devices. iCloud has a maximum file size of 50GB, while OneDrive has an impressive 250GB maximum – though unless you work with seriously large video files, it’s unlikely that you’ll ever need to upload files over 50GB. Both services make this a streamlined and accessible process, with synchronisation being automated and efficient. With both iCloud and OneDrive, you can upload files via desktop app, mobile app, or web browser. OneDrive is built into Windows 10’s File Explorer (Image credit: Microsoft) Overall, OneDrive offers a broader and more impressive set of features. This customisation means you can divide your files between folders that you want to keep secure and folders where you’re more concerned with quick access. It allows you to set up an area within your drive with additional security measures, such as a fingerprint/face scan or a code sent via email or SMS. When it comes to security features, both iCloud and OneDrive offer two-factor authentication, but OneDrive has an extra tool called the Personal Vault. With Apple’s software, while the iWork apps save version history, there’s no equivalent versioning feature built into iCloud Drive. This works with all file types, not only Microsoft documents but also PDFs, photos, videos, and more. OneDrive has a useful version history tool that allows you to revert files to previous versions from the past 30 days. There are a few similar collaborative features, such as the ability to work simultaneously, but unlike OneDrive, you can’t access and edit documents from the browser interface, which limits you to editing on fully synced devices. ICloud has similar integration with Apple’s iWork apps – Pages, Numbers, and Keynote – which are free to Apple device owners. OL mapped this integrated foreground/background style in earlier albums, most obviously in his 1996 double CD Opium. But then, why question OL's influences? Eno has paid his dues too. Maybe you think Eno is a bit cheap as a loopster when matched against, say, Terry Riley. Are there any anomalies? You might wonder about "Querenica", which is almost too familiar, too traditional and you might wonder about the closing stanza, "Waves of Sound", which appears to be a call & response homage to Brian Eno. the beautiful solitude of "Walking Alone". "A Secret Garden", vaguely eastern, the terraced space of fountains and peacocks, like The Far Pavilions. So the narrative develops, the lyricism as simple as a haiku. And you can sense it creeping across the landscape. Various creatures awake as they sense the light. Birds, bells, a gentle melody emanating like a spiral from the star. You might be awake or you might be dreaming in the pre-dawn. While it isn't new - the hynoptic rhythm of trains is a staple of radio dramatists - OL's interpretation is superb. In his press release, OL says he got the idea from a train ride he took as a youth from Cologne to Moscow. Nice doubling of his acoustic with the electric. Track 4, "Dreaming On The Starlight Train". A bit of menace here, yet it's ambiguous enough that this sleep might not be the big one. This is a strange piece, extremely slow, close to a stagger, which drops occasionally into the flamenco fundamental like a descending shroud. Disembodied, like being in an immersion chamber. A pleasant floating sensation gives way to flight. The water replaces the customary chordal strokes. The surf underpins the melody, spreads horizon-ally. Deep with sentiment, it's a farewell, the beginning of a journey. guitar is also doubled, so the whole effect is rather like a zither. The tone is Mediterranean, with the acoustic guitar triggering synth washes (not unlike Phil Manzanera's ghostly "Lagrima"). So what about these docu-rocku lullabies? Grass grows out of the dust, cottonwood seeds from the Spring suddenly produce 3 feet tall seedlings within a few days. The smell of the moisture hitting the dust is wonderful, sweet and almost overwhelming. It is amazing how the desert explodes after the first big rain. yet consider this recent passage from his Internet diary: This is odd, isn't it, as he's the man who said that words get in the way of the music. As he's such a sensitive player, he creates that romantic identification with Nature that the poets of old wrote about. What OL has done here is re-articulate the world we have become deaf to. Surf, birds, wind, rain - they become cliches within our daily frame of reference, become all motion without meaning. Because the contemporary world is so full of industrial noise, we become blase about what we hear. Implicit in the act is transcendentalism. and a means whereby we can evoke the spirit world. Essentially, music is an emulation of the natural world. Is this good old musique concrete? Certainly a case can be made that all music today is nothing more or less than a sound montage due to multi-tracking and signal filtering. For the most part, the foreground remains OL's signature flamenco guitar melody, while the background is a synth backwash, with natural sounds merging metrically. What's the term? Sprechkunst? The language of music, that quality in the tonality that describes the landscape behind it.Īnd there always is a landscape, a shifting geography of foreground and background. OL is very much an acoustic painter, his sonic architecture always extremely visual. You could call it environmental music, a means of establishing space. It's also subtle, almost subliminal at times, something the listener can grow into. This stuff is extremely down-tempo, like the relaxed breathing of a contented dreamer. The 13 tracks make up a narrative, which is like a radio play without the dialogue. yes, "soundscape", for that's what this CD is. It's background, almost a whisper, a subtlety in the overall mix of the soundscape. Yes, he actually uses a recording of a moving train as part of his instrumental. This is the ambience of "Dreaming On The Starlight Train", just one of several such quasi-mystical tracks on Ottmar Liebert's latest CD, In The Arms Of Love. Although you are alone, somehow you feel you are in the arms of love. The stars seem larger, their astrological patterns obviously navigating your journey. The muted chatter of the wheels on the rails, metric, polymetric, isometric. You're on a train, perhaps travelling through the Rockies, snug in a roomette. Where are you? Gently rocking in the darkness, half-asleep, the shrouded landscape flickering past outside the window. Well, find solace in the fact that you aren’t alone. But there are still deeper levels of meaning. We have seen how the shape of Pan Ku's shield represents the cosmic egg and how the interplay of the two cosmic forces, the yin and the yang, are represented by the black and the white halves of the Tai Chi symbol. The older chapters, consolidated with the newer commentaries, form a single, cohesive work that is the basis of The Book of Changes we read today. These masterworks were written as supplements to the older parts of the book. The most famous of all commentators was the sage Confucius, whose writings, together with those of his contemporary Lao Tsu, formed the backbone of subsequent Chinese philosophical thought.Ĭonfucius is believed to have added at least some of the commentaries known as the Ten Wings. With the passage of centuries, devotees have added extensive commentary. One of the most interesting features of the book is that its creation has been something of a community effort. Research in this century has arrived at a number of conclusions about the I Ching's history, about its uses in the past, and also about its meaning. What could be easier or more simple than a life guided by instinct?Įven though scholars believe this book to be one of the oldest in existence, it is used even today as both a tool to investigate the permutations of life and as an oracle. The word "I" also refers to the notions of "simplicity" and "ease." This suggests a deep connection with the natural world. In the context of the book itself, the Chinese word "I" refers to "change." For this reason, the text is known in the English language as The Book of Changes. The writings require us to reflect on the meaning of a very basic and ancient set of ideas. This quality not only indicates its considerable age, but is, perhaps, the source of its greatness, since these writings demand that its readers use both intuition and open-minded thinking. Although it presents the concept of an orderly, structured universe, the writings are puzzling because of their extensive reliance on very old images and metaphors. To those who understand it, it is certainly one of the most cherished. In the same way that mythology sparks both the imagination and the intellect, so, too, does the "I."įor this reason, it is one of the most consulted and commented on books ever written. When discussing Chinese philosophy it is difficult to avoid turning to the I Ching. Among other things, the "I," as it is known, is a treatise on the practice of divination, or foretelling the future. For more about the eight trigrams, click the header.Īn I Ching hexagram is composed of two trigrams. The meaning of a hexagram is decided by what two trigrams are paired in it, one above the other. Each trigram represents a basic natural force. That makes a total of eight possible trigrams (2 x 2 x 2). A trigram is a combination of three lines that can either be whole or broken in two. The I Ching hexagrams have their own symbolic meanings, but these stem from the two trigrams of which they consist. They represent yin and yang, the basic polarities of Chinese cosmology and philosophy. In I Ching, each hexagram has its own particular meaning in divination. That means there are 2 6 = 64 possible combinations of lines into hexagrams. Each of these lines can be solid or broken. Hexa in hexagram means six, which refers to the six lines that form a hexagram. You find links to all of the hexagrams and their divinatory texts below.
